New book release

Post by Lloyd »

Mike S announced elsewhere this:

Gunpowder and Glory: The Explosive Life of Frank Brock OBE, by Harry Smee and Henry Macrory.

It's due for release in June or July, and available for pre-purchase on Amazon.

Harry Smee is a grandson of Frank Brock, and great grandson of Arthur Brock. He refers to Alan St H. Brock (Frank's brother, and author of Pyrotechnics: The History and Art of Fireworks Making and A History of Fireworks) as Uncle Alan. At one time Harry was on the managing board of Brock's Fireworks, together with Ron Lancaster.

I exchanged a few emails with him about 6 months ago, while I was hunting for documentary evidence of Brock's Orion Flashing Guns composition (an early strobe effect that people allege is documented in Alan Brock's first book, but isn't). At the time, he mentioned that he was writing Frank's biography. I'm pleased to hear that publication is imminent and I look forward to reading it.

Here in the UK, the book was published on March 16. I ordered a copy two days ago, with an estimated delivery date of April 5, but it arrived yesterday evening!

So far, I've only read the first chapter, but it promises to be a well-written account of a momentous period of history and the part played in it by the Brock family, with particular emphasis on Frank Brock's World War 1 exploits.

Well, shucks, Richard! I mean... just because it's of British authorship...

Mine's not due to deliver until July. <sob>

I've just ordered a copy of the paperback. According to Amazon, I'll have to wait a couple of weeks for it to arrive.

Congratulations, Richard!

It's my current 'bed-stand reader'. I'm only a few articles in, and since I'm a 1st-Fire recipient, I've read all of them at least once before (some in the long past). But it's turning out to be a great read.

Linda has a special skill at cleaning-up and re-formatting documents like those, and has done a nice job compiling this first edition.

My copy arrived today!

First impressions are that it is a really well produced publication. I foresee happy bedtime reading for quite some time.
