I'll admit it's very tempting! I'll check my diary.

Re: 53 inch shell
The organisers at Valletta 18, who sponsored the 53" shell that St Catherine's firework factory built, apparently didn't ask the Malta authorities permission. 38hrs before lift off it gets cancelled for safety reasons.

Unbelievable!
Or, having had some previous experience of Malta and the Maltese, maybe not!

Re: 53 inch shell
WHAT a bust! I hope you enjoy your trip, anyway. Maybe you'll at least get to see the shell, face-to-face, as it were.

Re: 53 inch shell
Locky, let’s hope they didn’t wanna start with out ya and just delayed the firing.
Re: 53 inch shell
Well at least the main display is going ahead with shells up to 15 inch, as I said in a previous post firing a 53 in Valletta is slightly crazy as the mortar would have to be supported above the ground.
Sorry about your flight delay Ben rumor has it a TR3B was seen flying over London

Re: 53 inch shell
I understand - from early reports - that the show was wonderful, even if the 53" shell wasn't fired!
I hope you enjoyed it, Richard!

Re: 53 inch shell
Here's video of the 3-minute display that contains all the larger shells (except the 53-inch!). Sorry about the wind noise - not much I could do about that.

Re: 53 inch shell
Some nice shells in there. Thanks for sharing. Is it common to use fast burning stars? It seemed to me that some of the stars were burning up a little fast for the size shells they were in? Not that I have any complants just curious if there may be a reason for that?
Re: 53 inch shell
Bradley,
I didn't feel that, myself. The Maltese shells have a tendency to use fairly fast-burning stars, both for the reason that they're most-often chlorate-based, and because the Maltese are very 'shape' oriented. Longer burn times would result in those precise patterns beginning to sag at their peripheries.
Some of them might have appeared fast because of their delayed effects. Some of those peony patterns only appeared in the last 10% or so of the stars' flights, so they couldn't last very long after that, or the shape would've been lost.

Re: 53 inch shell
Word is spreading throughout Żurrieq and among fireworks enthusiasts that the largest ball of fireworks ever manufactured in Malta is set to be ignited a month from today in Wied iż-Żurrieq.
Originally this should have been used as part of the Valletta Pageant of the Seas, but its ignition was cancelled because of security and safety problems.
The word is that it will be ignited at sea over Wied iż-Żurrieq to mark the occasion of the inauguration of the monument to St Catherine which is at the entrance to Żurrieq.
TVM contacted Manwel Gauci who manufactured the ball but he said that at this stage he cannot confirm a date.
This news could also not be confirmed by the Secretary of the Għaqda Mużikali ta’ Santa Katerina, Kevin Schembri, or other sources close to V18 organisers.

There is a rumour, I'm not allowed to say more. But apparently the event organisers are in final talks with the company supplying the barge. I couldn't believe how much a barge is to rent

Ok, date set. Police happy with safety...... but..... the environmental people are worried about the little fishes. Looks like they are going to have the final say.
Re: 53 inch shell
Today's update....
Mr Fireone in Malta has been booked to shoot it.
Looks like (today) it will go ahead

I do have a slight sinking feeling.
Re: 53 inch shell
Bad news it exploded in the mortar, barge, and tug survived no injury’s AFAIK
Re: 53 inch shell
That's too bad, but that's the risk, when you build one that big...

What a shame. All those involved must be deeply disappointed, and I feel for them.

I'm really gutted, I'm sure Ben is too and I feel for the guy that built it - glad everyone is ok.
