Explosives Magazines
I'm begging for advice again... I think this is probably a question best for Ben L. - I have 2 explosives magazines on my license ( images below ). Ignore the flaking paint and rust, they will be tidied up and spick and span by the time I'm done. However, the locks have been removed. Does anyone know what the best, HSE compliant, solution would be. Would a "normal" lock smith be able to do it and is it going to cost me an arm and a leg like everything else ?
thanks,
Sam.

Re: Explosives Magazines
Ok, back home now and I can view on a decent size screen.
The only HSE approved lock I have heard of is a Battleship/cruiser Chubb padlock. I would guess that a five lever BS approved pair of locks would be sufficient on each door. If you google ' Chubb 3G114E' this would be the type of lock that I would suggest.
Can you take some measurements for me, the centres of the tapped holes and the distance from the face of the tapped hole edge to the centre of the keyhole (backset).
I think these would be quite easy to fit yourself, just need to work out the thread of the holes and get some suitable screws. Or if you got a welder, we could adapt what's there to suit what you want. For instance we could fit the above type lock with Euro Cylinder that can match other locks, ie workshop.
Cost of four basic locks ( but bs approved, Chubb copy) would be about £100 cost price.Because I appreciate what you have achieved and your passion, I will pay 50%.
Let me know the measurements and I can get a sample to you for fit.
Good luck
Ben

Crikey Ben,
thank you. I'm not going to let you pay 50%, but would very much appreciate the help - should be the other way around, me paying you back. ok, I think I'm following what you are saying, I'll be at work most of tomorrow but will get up and take some measurements and draw out a diagram and get back to you.
love you guys.

Re: Explosives Magazines
I must admit I thought the suggestion a little odd at first when I googled. That was compounded by the first three leading videos being how to pick the lock. Curiosity got me since I did spend a short time around a lock smith in the 90's which lead to some experiances picking locks.
After watching the video My original thoughts seem way off base. Interesting lock!

Re: Explosives Magazines
Sorry Ben,
it's taking me longer than I thought. In order to get accurate measurements I need to remove the locks. I have one off but the bolts on the other are rusted on so I'll be cutting it off with my angle grinder when the weather clears.

Re: Explosives Magazines
No problem mate. If you can send a pic of the existing lock, we can maybe make keys to them.
Re: Explosives Magazines
Hi Ben,
Do any of these help ? I've managed to get all the locks off with a dremmel. They have been painted over several times and it's difficult for me to tell what they are ( in fact I have no clue - but I'm hoping you might ). The larger lock says "Welco" on it. I could always send them to you if you need. My ELO said I would need 2 of the larger Welco locks ( 1 per magazine ) and 4 of the smaller D shaped locks ( 2 per magazine ) to be compliant. What do you think ?

Re: Explosives Magazines
Hi Sam, the welco locks are not a problem, new cylinders are £35 each, unfortunately I can't get these keyed alike.
Ok, now the bad news. The other locks are Bramah MD27, we can do a 'lever change' but they work out at about £130 per lock, a quick search online shows the cheapest rrp at £168 plus vat.
My advice would be, go back to your ELO and show him the Chubb 3G114e spec and ask if two of these on each door, plus the welco would be ok.
We would then have to modify a few bits, ie the key hole would need moving ect

Thanks Ben,
we're good to go with the chubb locks and we should be ok without the Welco locks. They can always be added later if they prove necessary. There is a guideline for 7 lever locks, which makes sense as to why the Bramah's are so expensive but I think we should avoid that. Do you expect any welding will be required? I'll check on how much the keyhole will need to be moved.

Re: Explosives Magazines
It would probably make sense if I got one to you for a 'fit'. I'm now off work until the 17th (Malta calls), but when I get back I will look at the dimensions of each. I'm guessing it will just be the keyhole to be moved
Re: Explosives Magazines
ok great, thanks Ben. Have a great time, one day I hope to join you out there if you'd have me. I'll PM you my address on here, and let me know how I can pay you.
Thanks,
Sam

Re: Explosives Magazines
Of course, anybody welcome to join me. I'm out again on the 1st Sept.
I'm thinking of a drive down, I still got half a shed full of tubes and other bits for you. Maybe I can pick Ken up on my way through?
Maybe Saturday the 26th Aug?

Re: Explosives Magazines
Well that would be awesome, picking up Ken on the way, even better. I have a whole bunch of family staying from the Friday until the Wednesday ( so there may be a lot of kids around ) but we can work around that. The only downside would be I'd usually offer to put you up but wouldn't be able to that particular weekend. I'm also around the 19th / 20th and I won't be working on the 24th if that's any help ?
