Malta dates 2017
Nobody can say that you haven't been given notice;
Mount Carmel factory in Zurrieq is 22nd/23rd July.
The best one is St Mary's in Qrendi 14th/15th August.
Air Malta allows booking 331 days before. I booked my economy return seat, including luggage, for £114.50 today. Car hire is €15/day. Digs can be as low as €36/night.
No excuses!

Sorry, I forgot to mention. When booking the The €15/day for car hire, if you mention Pyro-gear, it also includes a factory visit to another factory!.
Re: Malta dates 2017
how many places are there?
Sounds great.

Re: Malta dates 2017
Most factory’s like to keep the maximum to 12 but I would need to get that confirmed as it could be more.

As Ken said above about numbers of people.
Places to visit is huge. I'm not sure if it was 30 odd factories on the island, displays most weekends from June to October. Drone footage of two shows at once 4km appart looked good taken in August.

The ground fireworks competition is at the end of April if anybody fancies it. Any forum members have been invited behind the scenes by one of the competitors.

Re: Malta dates 2017
So, the logical thing to do would be to go to Malta in late April and stay there until mid August.

Nice to see they have kept the venue closer together this time.
I think I will be out in Malta this year to meet up in July august sometime.

I've gotta get a passport and figure out a way to pull a trip there off. Some of those mid level effects are just awesome. It would be a site to behold the way they are set up for sure. Not to mention seeing them shot live.

Re: Malta dates 2017
Well, I'm off on the thursday and leave on Monday. I just booked a return from Gatwick with extra leg room for £200.
If anybody can't do four nights, Friday is big, but Sunday is huge with our friend Sean in Gozo.
I can buddy up for the shows and factory visits but during the daytime I will be busy, 2nd viewing of a pyro-gear crash pad .

I'm lost for words.
What I experienced last night was incredible, St Mary's in Qrendi put on the best pyro experience I have ever been a part of. I'll post a link to video and pics when I can. Well done Sean.

Doh!, that's the 'others down the road'.
When I get back I'll try to sort some video, it is a shame though that more than two villages have such spectacular shows on the same night. Last night we stepped back a bit a could watch 4 shows at the same time.
Sam, check you messenger.

Re: Malta dates 2017
No clue how that's done. Can't for the life of me work it out.
Re: Malta dates 2017
I can envision how it might be done, but I think it's too 'delicate' a balance of effects to make work reliably.
I think it's probably an 'artwork' shown as a physical effect. I don't trust the image.
There are a couple of things wrong, but the most-salient issue is the orientation... NOTHING breaks (except by accident) exactly erect to the horizon!
It's still worth exploring, though!

Re: Malta dates 2017
Firstly the picture wasn't taken by me so I can't be 100% its real.
But please excuse me here because I'm very 'green' when it comes to the designs. Some shells tow a price of ply behind them attached by a length of rope, would this help with the horizontal plane?

Re: Malta dates 2017
Locky,
An 'orientation device' like a parachute helps, but can't control 'rotation'. We worked a LONG time to find a cost-effective means of doing precise orientation (for a particular theme park customer), and were never able to come up with something that both worked and was affordable.

Re: Malta dates 2017
Lloyd, I'd be interested to know how you envision it could be done - if you're able to share. Ben, have you got a picture of the plywood tow ?
Re: Malta dates 2017
Sambo,
We never came up with an economical means to ensure orientation in all three axes. It can be done electronically, but it's very expensive. (now that piezeo-gyros are available, probably less so than 20 years ago when we did our research)
The actual shape could be generated by carefully-placed stars that had a few with 'dark relay' between spark-producing layers, to produce the dark areas. It would be a chore to perfect, but I can envision it's being pretty straightforward from a purely technical standpoint.

Re: Malta dates 2017
Despite the obvious difficulties that Lloyd points out, I'd love to believe that happened for real!
Could you prevent rotations about any axis by, say, attaching spring-loaded fins and making sure the shell burst before it reached apogee?
Even so, you would need remarkably good timing for every single star.
P.S. This clashed with Lloyd's response.

Re: Malta dates 2017
Sambo,
I might add, that if the shell were small enough, it could be 'hard mounted' to the top of a tall tower, and shot as part of an ersatz 'set piece'.
Richard, you can control 'roll' with a drag chute or ribbon tail. You can't control spin about that axis, though. All you can do effectively is measure the spin, and explode the shell some number of degrees prior to 'perfect' alignment, based upon the speed of rotation.
Such devices exist already, but add a prodigious cost to a shell.

Re: Malta dates 2017
Do you think those disks stabilise the trajectory of the shell similarly to the effect induced by the drag on the stick of a rocket. I had thought of a "dark relay" being used but just couldn't imagine someone creating and placing all the stars accurately. but actually, if you look, you'd only need 2 types of stars as the location of the eyes is at a similar radius length to the mouth; those with charcoal / relay / charcoal and those with charcoal only.
Could that particular orientation just be good fortune.

Re: Malta dates 2017
And there you go! Fastening it to a tower guarantees the orientation!
The star design and placement is only a matter of (perhaps long) experimentation, to get the delays just right.
