Buttered Popcorn Stars

Post by davidg »

Buttered Popcorn, taken from APC and modofied so percentages add up to 100

Potassium Nitrate 55.1%
Pine Charcoal 11%
Sulphur 7.3%
Sodium Bicarbonate 5.5%
Antimony Trisulfide 8.3%
Aluminium 300Mesh 7.3%
Dextrine 5.5%

Ball milled as follows (Pyro-Gear Mill)

1.5KG Lead media
300gms ceramic media
Add KNO3,C,S,Bicarb and dex, mill for 10 minutes (edited per feedback)
remove ALL milling media then add Al and Antimony, run for 5 minutes to mix.

Pump or roll using 70/30 water+Alcohol.

EDIT: Can I recommend that the aluminium is atomised as opposed to flake? The two vary the effects and both are good in their own way, but to emulate the intentioned effect, I believe that atomised aluminium at 300# - 350# appears to work best.

I've got some but I've not used because the molecular formula is sb4s6 and all the books say use sb2s3 not sure if it will do the same thing.

It has many related names such as baking soda, bread soda, cooking soda, and bicarbonate of soda. In colloquial usage, its name is shortened to sodium bicarb, bicarb so yes it is ;)

Wonderfull effect I must admit . I made some 1" comets and 1/2 stars with this comp and must say it is a very nice one. It does burn fast , and this IM sure is attributed to the milling . I dont believe that this is a needed step. I may be wrong , but from many more educated mentors , I have concluded that it is an unessisary step and one that may add additional dangers that dont need to be there .

I tend to agree. Much of the literature suggests that glitter-type effects are degraded if the components are too intimately mixed. However, I have to admit that I've never done the experiments, so I can't verify this from personal experience.
Even when I'm wrong, I'm convincing.

Yes, ball milling the organics does appear to negate the effects. Too efficient a burn. This wants to smoulder and spark. I am no longer milling this but for the ten minutes the nitrate needs. Then tumble it!
