What’s everyone’s favorite gold

Post by Boophoenix »

I’m looking for a gold glittery effect to go with blue cores? Anyone got a facorite they’d like to share?

If I can get everything wrapped up and finished in time the first round will be shot in early Sept. I’m aiming to do a meteor shell or two with the gold to blue. I’m cutting it close though. It’ll probably take me a few days to do the meteor itself with all the drying time required.

I'm kind-of partial to "Buttered Popcorn Glitter". Gold, big spritzels, and hangs for a good time.

"Buttered Popcorn" gold glitter batch using raw chems instead of meal-D
lb oz
Potassium Nitrate 18 12
Charcoal 3 12
Sulfur 2 8
Antimony Trisulfide 2 14
X-Fine Aluminum 2 8
Sodium Bicarbonate 1 13
Dextrin 1 13

34 lb

Of course, I make fairly large batches. <grin> You'll have to proportion the chemicals to your batch sizes.

This version is a little slower (longer 'hang time') than when it's made with Meal-D as the base. But since most amateurs don't have a lot of Meal-D just 'hanging around the shop', I figured the raw-chems version was better. The Meal-D version is simply 25lb of Meal-D in place of the first three ingredients.

Ah yes, pounds and ounces - I remember those :)

To save everyone the hassle of doing the conversions, here's the result, to the nearest 0.1%:

Potassium Nitrate 55.1
Charcoal 11.0
Sulfur 7.4
Antimony Trisulfide 8.5
X-Fine Aluminum 7.4
Sodium Bicarbonate 5.3
Dextrin 5.3

Alternatively, replace the first three ingredients with 73.5% Meal-D.

I assume the X-Fine Aluminum is something like -350# atomized.
Even when I'm wrong, I'm convincing.

Yes...

It's a 'semi-spheroidal' atomized material, somewhere around 300 mesh. Over here, it's one of the common 'glitter aluminums'', purchased from Service Chemical.

BTW... the very reason that is in lb/oz instead of percentages is because it was designed to be made around one 25lb bag of commercial Meal-D.

That doesn't do the small hobby guy much good, though! So, thanks for converting it.

Thank ya fellas. I will have to check the stash to see if I have the sodium bicarbonate. The Al I should have covered since a few years ago I picked up a large drum even after Caleb dipped into it a few times for some sale materials.

Arm & Hammer baking SODA... NOT 'washing soda', and not to be confused with baking 'powder'.

ANY grocery store will have it.

I always forget that one, lol. I had some Harry stash I picked up in a lot from someone exiting the hobby.

Lloyd I do very much like your Buttered Popcorn and for some reason it makes rather excellent crossettes ( dextrin subbed for SGRS ). However, may favourtie glitters are the Sodium Oxalate ones, similar to the ones found in Hardt. The Spanish Gold is close enough :

Black Powder, with pine or grapevine charcoal 0.680
Sodium oxalate 0.090
Aluminum, atomized, 100 micron, 140-mesh 0.090
Antimony Trisulfide, dark pyro or Chinese needle 0.100
Dextrin 0.040

Thank ya, Sambo. I’ll give that a try the next build for Nov if I repeat this.

Slow gold is a beautiful golden star that leaves a golden trail in the sky for an incredibly long time.

Potassium nitrate 36
Charcoal (airfloat) 29
Charcoal (80 mesh) 14
Sulfur 9
Titanium (sponge, 40-80 mesh) 7
Dextrin 5
