My research into crackle has come up with a few off-the-wall formulations. Many of them are less than brilliant in performance and have tended to need a fairly intense prime to get them going. Here's one that is a bit more mainstream; it is easy to ignite (with screened BP Plus 4% dextrin) and is quite loud:
Bi2O3 41
CuO 40
Mg/Al 250# 3
Al atomised, 350# 13
Phenolic resin (dissolved in IPA) 3
With a slightly variable delay from ignition to explosion of about 1.8s, I suspect it won't compete with Lloyd's requirements for 'crash mines', but otherwise it seems to be very effective.

Yet another crackle composition
Even when I'm wrong, I'm convincing.
