My first batch of stars using PVB as a binder

Post by SwedishParaCordNut »

Here comes a picture of my first ever batch of stars that I've rolled using PVB as a binder. Obviously I used Pyro-Gears excellent star roller when I rolled them! :)

They look nicely-round and fully-packed! Pretty good size uniformity, too.
If those are finished, I think I'd be just a tad worried about how smooth they are. I like to see finished stars looking more like black, 320-grit sandpaper, than like 'satin'.

But they look pretty good!

Excellent post, did you notice how the PVB rolls so nice?

The stars look fantastic well done, what composition did you use?

Oh yes, it was actually for me like a completely diffrent experience to roll stars using PVB. It was both much, much easier as well as faster imo! And it almost didn´t stick any comp to the drum, wich is great I think. The less comp you waste the better. :)

I used the purple comp that you gave me:

0.48 Potassium perchlorate
0.12 Copper oxide
0.06 Strontium carbonate
0.12 Parlon
0.06 Magnalium, 230-mesh
0.5 PVB

I have to say that I´m very happy with the colour, both me and my wife thinks its a very nice purple! :)

Thanks for your input Lloyd!

I havent primed them yet, so maybe I should use a very hot prime to "balance" the smoothness out? It´s so annoying to blow them blind. :/

You will find that by using PVB in the composition the ignition is far more reliable let us know how your tests go.

I think they look really great. Well made and a credit to the star roller. I always used cut stars and I wish I had gone this route.
