Standard Fireworks Press

Post by sambo »

I have acquired an original standard fireworks press. This beast is a monster. I think it's 100 tonne with an hydraulic motor the size of a cupboard, pictures to follow but has anyone got any idea of how to even go about beginning to restore it - I wouldn't even know who to ask. Getting it to my house was a mission in itself as I think it weighs up to 500kg.

ok thanks very much Ken, the press is covered and it's pouring down at the minute so when it dries up i'll send over some images of the press itself. With regard to the pump, I don't have 3-phase and must confess I don't have a good understanding of the implications of that - i've got normal 240 domestic supply. Anyhow, here are the pictures of the pump :

Looks to me like a 240 volt job hence the blue plug, the power pack brings back fond memories I worked on loads of them in the 90’s they are more or less bullet proof, I don’t know what you paid for the press, Sam but that power pack is worth a lot, obviously you know you have a pretty historic bit of kit there I must say I am glad it got a good home, and sure I can help you restore it, now let me see the press :D

Yes, that looks to me as though it is single phase, 240V. But the current rating is pretty hefty - it would certainly give a 13 amp fuse a run for its money!
Even when I'm wrong, I'm convincing.

Nice score Sambo!

This is outside my background, but it sounds like you're not gonna have any troubles getting advice. Lloyd is pretty slick with those kinds of things, but I think he's been having some ISP troubles of late.

wow thanks guys, I'd really appreciate any help at all as I'm out of my depth. Ken, you are a man of so many talents it's just ridiculous. I've uploaded the press images to pyrobin on the links below, it has a wire mesh guard which seems to be pretty typical on the commercial presses i've seen and that makes it a little difficult to see clearly.

I only have the dies / plate that has come with it in the picture.

mate yes please !

I'm too nervous to even turn it on. Sorry to sound so embarrassingly thick about it. I have a friend who might help me get started at least. The chrome on the rams looks to be in good condition. It's outside at the moment under a tarpaulin which worries me.

shame none of you are down this way, just wish we were all closer !

Sam if you have power to it now make sure the hydraulic power pack is showing fluid at the correct level, make sure the shuttle valve is pointing up IE: natural and start the power pack it should run and indicate a pressure on the gauge, at this point don’t attempt to move the ram up or down just confirm the power pack is active.
I can’t see too well from your picture regarding the platens the safety mesh is in the way, if you post directly to the site the new software we have will auto size to the forum but allow us to zoom in as well.
The Chevy is running now so I can devote more time to this subject.

Hi Sam it looks like a single phase 2 .2kw motor so a 16 amp C type breaker should suffice .it might be good to change the oil and clean the filter before you start it if you have no history on it like oh yes I ran it last month . Good luck if I can help let me know, a holiday in that part of the world carnt be that bad. Regards B

Well,

i've started working on this a bit - it's going to be an enormous undertaking and probably beyond me but I'll make a start. I have also checked on this history of this and the title of this thread is wrong, for which i apologise !

It was originally Brock's then Astra's then someone else's and now mine. However, I do have 7 original standard fireworks star driers i'll have to put up pictures of - they have the original "special rules" posted inside

Sam.
