Dissolving Petroleum Jelly / Baby Oil

Post by sambo »

For those of you who like to add vaseline or baby oil to your fuels ( granulated BP or of course whistle ) as I do, may be a little frustrated by the price of Zippo lighter fuel ( in fact this is no longer what it used to be ) or Coleman fuel which is often recommended as a suitable solvent for the purpose of dissolving the Petroleum. However, I have been considering a number of alternative solvents and I came across this :

Looking a the MSDS it looks to be around 90 - 95% Heptane, which should be a good option and including delivery this works out at £3 per Litre. Not bad I reckon.

Hi Sam,

For years I have been using fast panel wipe, that is a very light petroleum distillate, mianly Naptha.

I discovered it in the early 90's and used it as fuel for my MSR stove.

Commonly bought in 5 litre metal cans. ( some plastic cans are permeable )

There are isopropanol versions about so you have to be careful what you buy.
