Some kind of crackle/thermite could certainly provide enough energy to produce that level of noise, but I don't think that's what's being used. I've videoed a lot of that type of explosion and don't get the same impression from the ematch. I suspect Lloyd's suggestion is closer to the truth. richar...

pains wessex used to use a steel tube for their mark 6red handflare with a plastic handle

i have never heard of kno3/boron needing ph stabiliser? is this a new finding? potential increased sensitivity would also apply if Thiourea was also used
as an additive to the smoke mix.
if you need to increase the smoke emision rate from the pellet/star,
maybe you could press it with a central core.
