Some kind of crackle/thermite could certainly provide enough energy to produce that level of noise, but I don't think that's what's being used. I've videoed a lot of that type of explosion and don't get the same impression from the ematch. I suspect Lloyd's suggestion is closer to the truth. richar...

Yes, Dave, but I am in 'that business'! And the machine CAN be equipped with a plasma head, should I wish to spend the money. Right now, I have no needs to cut metal on that machine.

pains wessex used to use a steel tube for their mark 6red handflare with a plastic handle
ill see if i can find an old fired one and have a look.

i have never heard of kno3/boron needing ph stabiliser? is this a new finding? thiourea 1.3mm/s Ferric citrate 4.8 mm/s Potassium ferricyanide 6.2 mm/s
i am surprised by the low value of thiourea.

as lloyd says it all adds to the database of knowledge.

it seems guanidine nitrate can also inhibit slag build up
and give a more porous structure

potential increased sensitivity would also apply if Thiourea was also used
as an additive to the smoke mix.

if you need to increase the smoke emision rate from the pellet/star,
maybe you could press it with a central core.
